Alumnus Developed Passion and Commitment at St. John’s
While in high school, New Jersey native Scott E. Moresco ’85CBA developed a passion for accounting. When it was time to decide on a college, he chose St. John’s University because its accounting program had a reputation for excellence.

“Whether it was the fraternity, playing football or basketball, or my coworkers at the Rathskellar, I was with a great group of people. The whole group meant a lot to me.”
Today, Mr. Moresco lives in Nashville, TN. He and his family recently moved there after spending nearly 24 years in Chicago, IL. He is Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal Holdings, LLC(A&M), a global professional services firm notable for its work in turnaround management and performance improvement of several large, high-profile businesses in the US and abroad. He has extensive experience advising clients on tax issues associated with troubled company restructurings, both in and out of bankruptcy, and significant experience in corporate merger and acquisition transactions.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Moresco spent 25 years as a partner with KPMG’s mergers and acquisitions tax practice in Chicago, where he founded the Midwest M&A Tax Group, and served as both the Midwest M&A Major Market Leader and West Region M&A Tax Service Line Leader.
An enthusiastic fan, Mr. Moresco attended St. John’s when the Men’s Basketball team reached the Final Four of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament in 1985. He could be found in the library or the Rathskellar, where he worked part time.
Several of the friends Mr. Moresco made at St. John’s joined Deloitte & Touche (now Deloitte) upon graduation. “It was great to have that camaraderie from St. John’s carry over into your first professional job,” he explained.
Proficiency in mathematics is essential for an accountant, and Mr. Moresco struggled with freshman algebra, but a St. John’s professor reversed all that for him. “I became a math maven,” he recalled. “Just like that, I loved the subject.”
Eventually, he graduated from St. John’s with honors as a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, an international honor society in economics. “By junior year I was carrying a 4.0 grade point average,” he noted.
At St. John’s, Mr. Moresco joined the Tau Kappa Epsilonfraternity. “We had a table in one of the common areas, and we all hung out together and participated in various events. It was great because it gave you a huge group of diverse friends. Everyone had a different focus with respect to their studies, but we all got along.”
Channeling his strategic and financial insight to support multiple causes, Mr. Moresco is an active Board Member and Treasurer for Project Lyme, a charitable organization which is advancing education, awareness, and solutions for tick-borne illnesses—a condition that has personally affected one of his children for over a decade.
Additionally, he serves as a board member for Nashville Wine Auction, a charitable organization that raises millions of dollars by uniting the wine community to fund the fight against cancer.
So much of the good in Mr. Moresco’s life spun out of his time at St. John’s. “Whether it was the fraternity, playing football or basketball, or my coworkers at the Rathskellar, I was with a great group of people. The whole group meant a lot to me.”
The self-discipline Mr. Moresco developed as a student carried over into the professional arena, and he has enjoyed great professional success throughout a 40-year career. “I don’t think I would’ve gotten where I am without that level of commitment.”
